Scooter's Story
These are excerpts from e-mails we get about Scooter from his adopted family. They are reprinted here with permission.

  As we approach mine and Scooters one year anniversary I thought y'all would like to know how he and I are doing. He is without a doubt the most wonderful dog I have ever owned! He is absolutely "Mr. Personality". Everywhere we go people are charmed by him. When we go camping everyone wants to meet him and pet him (which he graciously allows) and of course many people ask what breed he is. He has been all over the state being an example of what wonderful little dogs Schipperkes are.

You ladies may find this hard to believe but he is also VERY WELL BEHAVED! He has bonded so strongly to me and my husband that we can keep him under voice control at all times. We sit in the front yard all the time with him and he is never on a leash he stays where he is told to even if someone walks a dog right in front of our house on the sidewalk! Sometimes we also turn him loose when we are camping and he never wanders off. Yes we had to be very stern with him at first but once he completely understood what we wanted he has always been "good".

And he is so funny and smart. He is standing on the bed behind me right now "talking" to me with that funny half growl he has telling me to hurry up with the computer because he KNOWS it's Saturday and he is ready NOW to get in the car and go somewhere! He has completely charmed my husband Mike and the couple who are our best friends. Mike goes to bed about an hour before I do, so when he goes to bed he tells Scooter "Come on Scooter it's time to go to bed, let's go to bed." Scooter gets off the couch with me and goes and lays on the bed with Mike.
  Our friends Pam and David have a very old dog and they have already said they want to get a Schipperke when they are ready for another dog. Here is another one you ladies might find cute. He knows all the sound waves from the computer, he always lays with me while I am on the computer and when the computer says "Goodbye" and/or the signoff bell rings he stands up and waits to see where I am going next! He is just a wonderful little guy. Oh, and of course he has learned lots and lots of tricks. He "talks", sits, lays down, rolls over, pattycake's and dances all on cue, for a dog goody of course. OOOps forgot he plays dead too.

  He is also wonderful with my granddaughter. When she is here he sleeps with her, with her arm around his neck! She is four and she told me last time she was here that when she got big she was going to get "a girl Scooter dog to marry Scooter so they can make Scooter puppies for me". Ha Ha I told you he charms everyone.

  ==============================================================
Hello again from Tobi and Scooter ( he is watching me as I type, in between being "Daddy's Bed Buddy" Well if you remember I wanted a dog to help me hear things as I am hearing impaired. I guar-an-teeeee it did not take Scooter long to figure out that "Momma" is deaf as a post ! He watches me when the phone rings, if I don't answer it fast enough he runs back and forth between me and the phone until I go answer it!

If I am home by myself, which sometimes is a lot, he becomes "Super vigilant, and Super protective" signaling me if someone so much as puts a foot in our yard! He also has a distinctive growl and ear position if some one is across the street prowling around when he thinks they should not be. Now please understand that when my daughter or husband are here he does not do these things. He knows they can hear for themselves. Is he a smart little guy or what? Oh, but he did foil some bad guys when we were camping. In the middle of the night he started growling and talking and barking to wake my husband. Mike looked out of the trailer and someone was stealing our firewood. Who knows what else they might have done if he hadn't warned us of what was going on! Remember, this is one of the things I wanted him for -- to "hear for me" when we were camping.

He knows that if Momma puts food rather and clothes in the laundry baskets that she is loading the camping trailer and he starts going crazy, running around, talking and bumping me with his nose, as if to say "Hurry up, Momma I am ready to GO CAMPING NOW." If I just put clothes in a laundry basket he pays no mind to it. Another thing he does that shows how smart he is, if I put shoes on, go to the bathroom,and brush my hair, he starts going nuts even before I pick up my keys and purse. He knows from these "signals" that Momma is going somewhere and of course he wants to go too! (and he usually does).

And I sometimes call the little guy "Our Fruit Bat" he loves fresh grapes (his favorite), fresh peaches, and fresh apples. I figure they won't hurt him if he doesn't eat too much of them and that they are better than chocolate for him.

And now, I saved the funniest story for the last, Scooter has another nickname which is "Porky" and I'll tell you how he got it. When we go camping Scooter and Mike, my husband are "Early Morning Walking and Fishing Buddies." This summer we were camped at Dutch George campground on the Poudre River and about 6:30 in the morning Scooter and Mike went for a walk, as they promenaded down the walkway by the river a quite elderly lady ask Mike "Is that a pot belly pig or a dog?" As he tried to contain his laughter Mike politely answered " Ma'am, he is a Schipperke dog not a pot belly pig" We still laugh about that one!! For a week after that one everybody in our family and our camping friends too, called him "Porky" our potbellied pig in disguise.

It is a real shame that such a smart wonderful little guy had to wait so long to find the right family for him. But, hey let's be honest here he is a Schip and a hardheaded knot head sometimes. We really had to work on him a lot the first 4 months. I guess something in our favor was prior experience with a couple of knot headed dogs and horses. The animals with strong personalities such as Scooter are harder to train, but, we think much more rewarding and fun and usually intelligent after you get them "going your way". We to had a couple of experiences where Scooter tried to get between me and Mike and growled, but being experienced dog folk we just let him know quite firmly that Mike was the boss not him, and that I agreed with that assessment. Mike popped him, I fussed at him and hugged Mike to show that Mike and I were the alpha and beta around here, and that he (Scooter) was not the alpha male !

I should also give credit where credit is due, Schotzy my daughters dog, taught Scooter a lot by being such an excellent example of what we DID want.

I agree that at certain silhouettes Schips resemble a Javelina (Texas Wild Pig). Don't worry Scooter is too much of a ball of flying fur to ever get very fat! When he is outside, at ease, in the back yard he never stops harassing the birds, and just running around for the absolute joy of just running crazy. We laugh at him because when we leave to get in the car he ALWAYS has to do at least 2 laps around the yard a maximum speed and "water the tree" before he gets in the car or truck. ha ha ha ha.

I thought that y'all would enjoy the latest Scooter story -- he really saved the day this time! Well as all of y'all know, I can't hear diddely squat. My husband hears only pretty good as he has a mild hearing loss from working construction. Well about 1:30 AM Scooter proceeded to wake my husband up. (he KNOWS I can't hear him when I am asleep). First Scooter began just barking quietly. That didn't get Mike out of bed so Scooter began to bark louder and run from the bedroom to the kitchen. That still did not get sleepy Mike out of bed, he just told Scooter to "Hush". But Scooter persisted by barking loud, whining and even licking Mike's face. That was when Mike knew something was really wrong because Scooter does not lick faces ever!

Mike FINALLY got up after all of Scooter's efforts, stumbled into the kitchen following Scooter and there was water running all over the kitchen floor, all over the hall floor and running out of the garage down the driveway into the street !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We had two frozen, then burst water pipes in the garage. Just think about how much water there would have been and how much damage there could have been in our garage from frozen water on the garage floor and damage to the kitchen and hall floors if Mike hadn't found the water until his usual wake up time of 6AM.

SCOOTER THE WONDER DOG SAVED THE DAY!
